A rather special repair project
This wind-powered water pump is one of the very few systems built by Aeromotore Tozzi e Bardi in Italy with a wind wheel diameter of 9 metres. It was the very last wind pump the company ever made, built in 2006.
In our assessment, the company lacked a little experience with wind pumps of this size, so a few parts were not dimensioned as well as they might have been.
One example was the damaged ball bearing that holds and guides the tail vane: the load was simply too high and the bearing had disintegrated. We overhauled the system professionally and returned it to full working order.

A record holder
This wind pump deserves our special attention, because it holds a few records: it is one of the very few wind-powered water pumps built by Aeromotore Tozzi e Bardi in Italy with a wind wheel diameter of 9 metres. Some say it is the largest wind pump in the whole of Italy.
The last of its kind
What is certain is that this was the very last wind pump the company ever built, completed in 2006. The owner can vouch for it: he worked there until the very end and played a major part in bringing this machine to life.
The problem
In our assessment, the company lacked a little experience with large wind pumps, so a few parts were not dimensioned well. The damaged part was the ball bearing that holds and guides the tail vane: the load was too high and the bearing disintegrated. Replacing it is a major job, because the tail vane has to be lifted off and hung back on with a crane. That calls for two crane vehicles, the installation team and the right weather.

If you notice as an operator that the hand brake is stiff, or that the tail vane no longer moves freely and evenly, that can be a sign of a bigger problem. We strongly recommend having it inspected, because damage can otherwise follow.
